Investigating systemic barriers to tech employment for underrepresented youth in South Africa

The challenge

South Africa’s tech industry is expanding, yet many digitally skilled young individuals from under-resourced communities (African, Coloured, and Indian descent) face significant barriers to securing meaningful employment. Naspers Labs sought to understand the root causes of this exclusion and identify systemic changes to foster a more equitable tech employment ecosystem.

The solution

Moop was commissioned, in collaboration with a qualitative  research agency and DEI specialist to produce a research-led report that uncovered systemic barriers and provided actionable, ecosystem-wide recommendations. This collaborative initiative involved:

  • Ecosystem Mapping & Data Analysis: Charting the journey from education to employment.
  • Stakeholder Interviews & Focus Groups: Engaging diverse participants to capture lived experiences.
  • Competency Benchmarking: Developing industry-aligned standards for entry-level roles.
  • Global Case Studies: Analyzing effective inclusion models from various countries.

The impact

The study yielded critical insights and a strategic roadmap, delivering concrete recommendations to address inclusion and employment equity. This work directly supports Naspers Labs and the broader industry in fostering a more diverse and thriving tech workforce in South Africa.  It also brought together key stakeholders in South Africa’s skills ecosystem to meaningfully collaborate in solutioning the problem.
